RYKER

Amelia was still mad at me. She hadn’t shown up for our morning run, which was the first time she’d missed it since we made it routine. I’d gone for a run alone to burn off my frustration, but I was still agitated when I showed up at the dining hall for breakfast. That agitation only grew when she met my eyes before glancing away quickly and joining Joe, Dane, Wayne, and Zachary at their table—a table that only had one empty chair. It was hard not to take that personally.

Still, I kept an eye on her throughout the meal, hoping she’d at least look my way. She didn’t.

I hated the way I felt about it. Since when did I care if I pissed anyone off or not? I always did my job to the best of my ability and didn’t care what people thought of me. That’s what I’d been doing last night by protecting Amelia from getting attacked again. How could she be mad at me for that?

She might not have realized it, but I could tell the weight of what she was dealing with was really starting to get to her. I got it, really I did. She’d been attacked repeatedly, and there was clearly a traitor in our midst.

After she went to go speak with Holden about the attack, I’d done my own research on the assistant. He’d been clever in getting the position here, and had falsified his background in such a way that he couldn’t be tracked. None of us were able to trace which pack he’d come from. An oversight that someone would surely have to account for.

But Amelia was pissed at me for doing my job of looking out for her, something I would never stop doing, no matter what she said or did.

I barely paid attention to the conversations going on around me during breakfast, and only half-listened when Jessica stepped up to the podium to brief us on today’s competition. My mind was fully engaged in watching Amelia, trying to find an opportunity to approach her and talk this out.

The moment came at the end of breakfast when Jessica dismissed the contestants to go to PT. Amelia was still at her table, so I stood and headed over, wanting to catch her as she left.

“Amelia,” I said quietly, bending down to whisper in her ear. “Can we talk for a minute?”

She flinched away from me. “I have nothing to say right now that you’ll want to hear.”

“Then, perhaps you’ll just listen.” I wanted to apologize for upsetting her. Even if I didn’t think I’d overstepped my boundaries, she obviously did, and I wanted to make things right.

Amelia shook her head. “You crossed a line, Ryker. If you hadn’t killed that wolf, we might have known who’s behind all this by now.”

I doubted that. If the assistant had made it into such a key position, I doubted he would give up information so easily.

I opened my mouth to say exactly that, but she was more pissed than I’d realized.
